A Wedding – one of life’s great moments…

A wedding is one of life’s great moments, a time of solemn commitment as well as good wishes, feasting and joy. In the Bible, St John tells us how Jesus shared in such an occasion at Cana, and gave there a sign of new beginnings as he turned water into wine.

Marriage is intended to be a creative relationship, as God’s blessing enables husband and wife to love and support each other in good times and in bad. For Christians, marriage is also an invitation to share life together in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. At St Mark’s, we endeavour to provide the support necessary for couples to plan their marriage service and to celebrate it joyfully.

Love between couples is a precious gift – it needs to be recognised, celebrated and protected. That is the purpose of marriage.  Your wedding day gathers together all the resources you both need to make marriage work: deep personal promises; a public commitment to each other – whatever the future holds; the joining of two sets of family and friends; a trust that the God who gives us the gift of this life will inspire us with the love and forgiveness that can enable two lives to become one. Choose the ingredients of your wedding day carefully. Seek advice from the many people eager to help – parish priests and photographers, caterers and caretakers – and plan an occasion which will draw together all the resources you feel you need: then it will provide shape and direction for the rest of your lives together.

The procedure for couples wanting to be married at St Mark’s:

1. Contact the Church Office to speak to the Rector, the Canon Dr Murray Harvey (07 3862 2221), and make an appointment to see him. At this first appointment, agree on a date and time for your Marriage.

2. What you need to bring to the first interview: Birth Certificates for both parties.  If either party is divorced, the original of the “Decree Absolute” needs to be sighted and noted.

3. After the interview our Parish Administrator, Dianne Kemp, will write to you confirming the date and time and providing details of fees. This letter will ask you for a deposit of $100 which is non-refundable. If after having received the letter you want to make a firm booking, send the deposit in as soon as possible, together with any other forms that we include with the letter.

4. Stay in contact with the Rector, as further appointments will be necessary to prepare you for your marriage and to organise the details of the service (e.g., the Service Booklet). The Rector will want to discuss your relationship and make sure that you have considered the spiritual issues and communication issues relevant to your future married life together. He will ask you to attend Marriage Preparation with Kinections (see below).

5. The rehearsal. This will be organised to take place a day or two before your Wedding.

What about fees? As at January 2017 the fee for a wedding at St Mark’s is approx. $1000. This includes the use of the church facilities, the payment for the priest, the cost of flowers in church, organ music, verger and administration fee. White pew bows are also available for your use and this is included in the cost. Cheques should be made payable to St Mark’s Anglican Church, Clayfield. The balance of fees is payable one month before the wedding.

Flowers: For information about the flowers and colours etc. please contact Mrs. Margaret Moxon 32628248.

Other Resources and Support: You will need spiritual and other resources and skills to make a success of their marriage. Skills such as communication and conflict resolution are vital for everyone, married or divorced, cohabiting or single, young or old.

The following site might help you gain helpful information and assistance to make your marriage and other relationships work:  http://www.kinections.com.au or phone them on 1300 114 397. Kinections offers a choice of two approaches to marriage preparation, briefly:

Building Our Future Together: BOFT is an interactive group program for couples who are preparing for marriage or commitment. It runs for one full day, from 8:45am to 5:00pm. A workbook and tea/coffee are included.  This course is offered at Woolloongabba; as outreach in a community facility; or by appointment as needed in groups of 5-6 couples.  OR

Prepare:  This program is similar to Building Our Future Together, however it is one-on-one with an educator. This system allows couples to explore their relationship using an Internet based questionnaire, followed by face-to-face time with an educator.
